The Macaron. A French, pastel coloured, Italian meringue based beauty, not to be confused with the somewhat less sophisticated coconut Macaroon. Macarons have become a bit of a ‘thing’ recently with their Saintly gluten free status, and frankly, I’m more than happy to jump on the bandwagon when it’s full of these, gluten free or not!
Yipsy was started by Angela Yip after giving up a career in finance to pursue Macaron perfection, and believe me, she’s nailed it. She hand delivered me a small but beautifully formed parcel of Macarons that I literally couldn’t wait to eat.
Presented with a miniature clothes peg, Yipsy sticker and ‘handmade just for you’ stamp, they feel special before you even open the package. Inside were a selection of macarons including Strawberry, Cookies & Cream, Pistachio, Raspberry, Lemon & Chocolate Praline
Each of them were handmade and hand decorated, they were so pretty I almost felt guilty eating them! I’m very glad I did though. The texture was melt in the mouth, the filling was light and creamy and the flavours were much more intense than their pastel colours let on. The raspberry was my favourite, it was so fruity and not too sweet, closely followed by the lemon, which was zingy and tasted of real fresh lemons rather than lemon flavouring.
Yipsy Macarons are the perfect sweet treat. I’d love to see these on an afternoon tea spread, and the gift boxes on offer at the online shop make a beautiful gift whether you’re gluten free or not. Move over cupcakes, there’s a new queen in town!
