Loki Wine

Loki Wine truly is one of the jewels in Birmingham’s crown. With a plethora of awards, including one for regional wine merchant of the year, it’s a mecca for wine drinkers from far and wide.

I wanted to get my mum a special bottle of wine for her birthday so I decided to take her to Loki to get their expert advice and try a few samples.

One of the great things about Loki is that there can be up to 40 wines on tasting at any time. A mixture of whites, reds and even a port, there’s something for every taste. My mum, aunt and I got a tasting card and decided to sample a few before choosing some to buy.

On the whites, we sampled a Chenin Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay. The Chardonnay wasn’t to my taste, but the Sauvignon Blanc was crisp and fruity, while the Chenin Blanc was refreshing and slightly fruity. The tasting wines hadn’t quite hit the spot though, so we decided to get some advice. My mum is a fan of very dry French whites, so a Sancerre was recommended. Described as the best Sancerre ever tasted, this wine is a Premier Cru, with only juice from the first pressing of the grapes giving a clear, crisp and dry taste. At £31 a bottle it made the perfect present.

Having got a lovely white for mum, my aunt wanted to buy me a housewarming gift so we moved over to have a look at the reds.

I enjoy fruity reds rather than oaky ones, swaying towards Malbec, Sangiovese and Rioja. Having tried a Malbec on tasting which I enjoyed, again I decided to ask for some advice as I fancied trying something a little different. For me, as I like Italian wines, I was recommended a bottle by Vignetti Di Vulture, a Pipoli, made from one of the best grapes in Italy. What made this one different is that it has a chocolatey aftertaste which is really moreish and very easy to drink.

Whether you’re looking for a special gift or just a really good wine to treat yourself to, Loki is an amazing place to go. Their knowledge is second to none and there’s no snobbiness at all, they’re more than happy to chat to you about what you like and you certainly don’t need to be an expert to walk out with a brilliant bottle of wine.

As well as the shop, there’s also a tasting room where there are tasting evenings, food and wine pairing events and even wine courses, so whether you’re a self confessed wine snob or you’re a total beginner, pay Loki Wine a visit in the Great Western Arcade and you won’t be disappointed!
