The Station, Sutton Coldfield

As a Sutton dweller, The Station has long been somewhere I’ve gravitated towards when out for drinks close to home. I live barely 2 minutes walk away and it’s conveniently located, next to the train station, for friends to join. Recently The Station has undergone a big refurb so I headed there last weekend to take a look.

First impressions were great, the new look is fresh, modern and airy and the outside space is fantastic, perfect for enjoying a cold beer on a hot day. As always, the beer selection was impressive, with a large selection of ales and craft beers on draft, an impressive collection of bottles from both well known and more obscure brands, and a healthy spirit selection, including a diverse range of gin. Duly noted for next time!

My other half and I grabbed a table and a food menu before deciding on what to have. I had a pint of Shipyard American Pale Ale which was right up my street, refreshing and citrussy with a grapefruit flavour. He had a pint of Station Master, a light, golden ale which seemed to go down well!

Of course with a new food menu, we had to indulge ourselves. I couldn’t resist the Pulled Pork Burger while Ste decided to be a glutton and had the Classic Combo sharing platter all to himself!

Now, when the bar man said “good effort!” in response to my ordering a Classic Combo for just one person, I should possibly have guessed that it was going to be large, but I think both of us were taken aback when we saw the size of this!

This easily could have satisfied both of us, with onion rings, Southern fried chicken strips, garlic bread, scampi, potato wedges, wings and nachos.

Of course though, I had my pulled pork burger, so poor Ste was on his own!

The burger was a lot bigger than I expected and in fact much bigger than the bun it was in which led to quite a mess as I attempted to eat it! The burger itself was tasty and better quality meat than usual pub fare. The pulled pork was quite spicy but a lot of it did fall out as I tried to eat. Bad times!

I had mine with sweet potato fries instead of the usual chips which were crispy and well seasoned. Overall, despite getting into a state trying to consume it, I really enjoyed the meal.

In terms of portion size, The Station certainly delivers on value for money, and the standard of the food is higher than close by competition like the Sutton Park Sizzling pub and The Bottle of Sack. The new decor is lovely too, making this a great place to hang out in Sutton.
